What causes Skin Hyperpigmentation?

Skin hyperpigmentation can have a significant impact on quality of life for both men and women due to its visibility and the social stigma often associated with it. In the pursuit of luminous and even-toned skin, depigmentation programmes have emerged as a transformative ally in the realm of aesthetic medicine.

Melanin is produced in the skin for protection from harmful UV rays. Skin exposure to UV radiation especially without protection from sunscreen leads to skin damage and over time this can result in hyperpigmented patches resulting in common symptoms such as freckles and melasma. Melasma can also be caused by hormones such as those released during pregnancy and topical treatments such as perfumed toiletries. Other common causes of skin hyperpigmentation include post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which can result from certain medications, skin trauma and skin inflammation, for example following the healing of a spot or eczema.

The Cosmelan Peel Programme is a scientifically proven leading medical depigmentation programme that is highly effective at treating skin hyperpigmentation. Over 1 million patients have been treated effectively.
